Painter
Bill West
Women curled up, stretched out or stretching, framed in a grid of windows, and palm trees never painted twice the same way: Bill West paints a calm, sensual world in lines that owe much to Matisse.
The artist
An Englishman apart
Bill West stands apart from the trends of English painting, whether the distortions of figuration or hyperrealism. He uses fauve colours softened with pastel tones, firm outlines for the bodies and diluted paint elsewhere, so that his canvases look like ink or watercolour.
The grid and the palm
His other signature is the grid: the women he paints are enclosed in small squares spread over the whole canvas, each window coloured differently, like a building without façades whose occupants, in intimate poses, do not know that the wall has been removed. The palm tree, reduced at times to a tuft of great fronds, answers their sensuality. His painting is free of tension, soothing and pleasant to look at.
