Painter
Bouchaib Falaki
The winnower, the spinner, the weaver, the barber, the mat seller: Bouchaïb Falaki paints the “little people” of Morocco, not as an ethnologist but as a poet of everyday life.
The artist
Career
Born in El Jadida in 1943, Bouchaïb Falaki has painted and drawn since childhood. Refusing academic painting, he taught himself and developed a style that has earned him a place in the history of Moroccan art. He has exhibited in Casablanca, El Jadida, Marrakech, Rabat and Tangier, as well as in Sète, Aix-en-Provence, Marseille and Rotterdam.
The poetry of everyday life
Falaki works by themes, sometimes over months or years. The old medinas, the countryside, the ksour of the south and the imperial cities, the Draa valley with its meanders and cliffs, rivers and villages are his sources. Some scenes tell the story of customs and traditions; others open onto allegorical, symbolic or moral readings, where realism and imagination intertwine. Joy and sorrow, female beauty and the splendour of nature meet in a light that brings calm and serenity.
