Painter
Bouchaib Habbouli
Born in Azemmour in 1945, Bouchaib Habbouli is a self-taught painter. After training as a youth centre leader with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, he led spontaneous painting workshops in his native town from 1958 to 1963. His first solo exhibition took place in 1970. He has also designed book covers and posters, notably for Transparency Maroc. He lives and works in Azemmour.
The artist
His work conveys a particular emotion and a highly personal world. Working in dark grey-browns, often with walnut stain, he has built over the years an anthology of faces: solitary heads painted on cardboard, elongated, flattened, barely suggested, drawn with vigorous lines. A stylised bird also recurs in his paintings.
Working on paper, skins, mounted cardboard or in ink, he creates reliefs, nuances and hollows that stir a range of sensations, from a touch of humour to a human cry of distress, offering an image of the human condition rooted in the deep earth of Azemmour.
