Painter
Bouchta El Hayani
Born in Taounate in 1951, Bouchta El Hayani trained at the École des Arts Appliqués in Casablanca, graduating in 1972 in decoration and graphic arts, before joining the Regional Teacher Training Centre in Rabat. A visual arts teacher, he has also produced posters, catalogues and book illustrations.
The artist
He began his career as a painter in 1970, when he was noticed for a lyrical abstraction marked by graphic forms with blurred contours. In the 2000s his work underwent an aesthetic transformation: frontal figuration, vertical composition, assertive drawing, faceless nudes standing in the middle of nowhere. His painting is defined by intense material and a free, frank gesture that reveals an immemorial, archetypal vocabulary.
Shown widely in Morocco and abroad, from Paris, Milan and Monaco to Tunis, Algiers, Kuwait and Syria, and an artist in residence at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris in 1998, he is represented in the collections of the Caisse de Dépôt et de Gestion, the Al Mada Foundation and Attijariwafa bank. He lives and works in Rabat.
