Painter
Brahim Bouhamadi
Lanes, villages, faces young and old, captured with a transparency so perfect they could be mistaken for photographs: Brahim Bouhamadi is regarded as one of Morocco’s finest watercolourists.
The artist
Career
Brahim Bouhamadi grew up in Tiflet, where he spent his youth in his father’s bookshop beside his elder brother; of that time he kept above all the illustrations of the books that made him dream. Driven by an irrepressible urge to draw, he left for Rabat against his father’s wishes and began to paint. Self-taught, he has since begun an international career.
The transparency of watercolour
With an observer’s eye and a remarkable visual memory, he records landscapes, streets and expressions, then renders them in watercolour with rare perfection. The realism is striking, yet it is the artist’s almost imperceptible hand that gives these everyday scenes their particular poetry. Humble despite his success, he loves transparency and he loves Morocco.
