Who is Cheaib El Barki?

Cheaib El Barki, Moroccan painter and graffiti artist

Born in 1983, Cheaib El Barki is a self-taught Moroccan painter and graffiti artist from the Rabat–Salé area. He grew up between Morocco and Amsterdam, where he first started painting as a teenager. Resilience runs through his story and his work: painting became the place where he rebuilt himself.

The street as a subject

El Barki paints the contemporary Moroccan city: movement, crowds, facades and, above all, car culture, with the Mercedes taxi as a recurring icon. Coming from street art, he works in mixed media, combining spray paint and paint on canvas, wood and salvaged car parts such as bonnets. Drips, black outlines and layers of bright colour give each piece its raw, urban energy, and build a visual memory of present-day Morocco.
