Who is Mohamed Benhamza?
Mohamed Benhamza is a multidisciplinary Moroccan artist born in Berkane. He studied visual arts in Oujda, then at the Regional Teacher Training Centre in Tangier, and settled in Oujda, where he divides his time between teaching art and his own work. An active member of the A-48 Art Network, he exhibits in Morocco and abroad and also takes part in theatre set-design projects.
The tarbouche as a symbol
Benhamza works across painting, sculpture, drawing and bas-relief. His signature motif is the Moroccan tarbouche, which he reinterprets from one work to the next as a sign of identity, memory and transformation. On large mixed-media canvases, red tarbouches, striped clothing and calligraphic lines stand out against deep, dark backgrounds, giving his figures a quiet, powerful presence.

Mohamed Benhamza is one of the artists shown at ARTWORKS by Moroccan Paintings in Casablanca. In May 2025, the gallery presented his work alongside that of Cheaib El Barki, a dialogue between his contemplative painting and El Barki's urban energy. Available works range from 90 × 90 cm to 150 × 150 cm, and include a 90 × 180 cm panoramic format.
