Painter
El Amine Demnati
Born in Meknes, El Amine Demnati led a double career as a painter and an architect. Not to be confused with the painter Amine Demnati, who died in 1971, he added "El" to his first name to distinguish himself.
The artist
As an urban planner, he liked to integrate elements of Moroccan heritage, zellige in particular, into his projects, and designed numerous public squares in Morocco and abroad: in Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, his great source of pride, and in France at Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Mantes-la-Jolie and Place Casablanca in Bordeaux.
An unclassifiable, independent figure, he was described by the critic Michel Bouvard, in a monograph devoted to his work, as an individualist, sensitive and frank, impatient and whimsical, who never stopped fighting for his place in the art world.
