El Mustapha Belyasmine
Born in El Jadida in 1966, El Mustapha Belyasmine graduated from the École des Beaux-Arts in Tetouan. His canvases fuse elements of traditional Impressionism, neo-expressionism and even realism, transformed by his gifts as a colourist: powerful, pure colours freed from constraint become the very subject of the painting.
The artist
His work is a love affair with Morocco, its fields and streets, mountains and mosques, and above all its soul. His highly personal technique captures movement: in his crowd scenes he paints not a single moment but a "slip of time", the motion of figures, light, shadow and shimmering heat. In his landscapes, grasses ripple in the wind and clouds race across turquoise skies.
As the critics Andrew Clandermond and Terence MacCarthy wrote, Belyasmine has an artist's soul, a Moroccan soul in love with its country, and it is this palpable love, together with his undeniable technique, that makes his paintings as pleasing to the eye as they are to the spirit.
