The artist
Career
Born in 1924, Gilbert Pélissier worked from October 1960 at the Villa des Arts in Paris’s 18th arrondissement, where Sisley, Renoir, Marcoussis and later Nicolas Schöffer had worked. He held his first exhibition in 1962, rue de l’Odéon. His work was acquired by the City of Paris and the Mendel Art Gallery in Saskatoon in 1971, and in 1978 by the Fonds national d’art contemporain.
From abstraction to the earth
After an abstract period in the 1970s and 1980s, he turned to an ecological concern, painting the earth as each person may imagine it. Drawing closer to Eastern culture and meditating on it, he developed a spontaneous gestural painting, refusing easy provocation.
