Rachid Taleb
Skeins of wool drying in the sun after dyeing. Fabrics hanging on the rooftops of the south. These simple images are at the heart of Rachid Taleb's painting.
The artist
A painter and a teacher
Born in Rabat in 1972, Rachid Taleb earned a baccalaureate in visual arts in Meknes in 1992 and a teaching diploma in Rabat in 1995. He became a teacher of visual and applied arts in Safi, while building a career as a professional painter with many solo and group exhibitions in Morocco and abroad.
The art of the "suspended"
His signature theme is what he calls the suspended: forms with hanging patches of colour, inspired by dyed wool and draped fabrics. It goes back to his Amazigh roots, where a tree can become a place of ceremony hung with patchwork, and where women's traditional dress is adorned with multicoloured threads. For Taleb, the suspended also speaks of rest, release and even death.
A lyrical abstraction
As the critic Abderrahman Benhamza notes, his work combines a diverted perspective, flat greys arranged like a construction, warm vibrating tones and a geometry of forms in search of harmony. His lyrical, rhythmic abstraction recalls the intense formal language of Moroccan painting in the 1970s.
