Painter
Hamid Bouhioui
Faces of women in acrylic, watercolour and monotype, sometimes threaded with words: Hamid Bouhioui, painter and acoustician, has made the female figure the heart of his work.
The artist
Career
Born in Casablanca, Hamid Bouhioui was spotted at fourteen by his drawing teacher, who organised his first exhibition in the staff room of his school. After his baccalaureate he left to study in Compiègne, France, where he earned a doctorate in acoustics and spent two years refining his drawing and painting at the city’s municipal school of fine arts. He then settled in Vancouver, on Canada’s Pacific coast, and has exhibited in Canadian galleries as well as in Morocco and elsewhere.
Faces and words
Women, and the face above all, are almost always present in his work. Writing too plays its part: the author of many published texts, Bouhioui paints what he cannot say and writes what he can, freely mixing words and forms on the canvas. His exhibition “Shifting Shapes” marked a turning point in his pictorial approach.
