Wafaa Mezouar
Originally from Meknes, Wafaa Mezouar graduated from the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Casablanca in 1980. She devoted fifteen years of her career to modern art tapestry, a little-known art form that earned her a gold medal at the Mahrès Festival in Tunisia in 1993.
The artist
From the 1990s she turned to abstract art in mixed media, giving pride of place to material. Critics describe her work as organic, textural, dimensional and spiritual. She works with recovered media, worn metal, pages from old books of poetry, sea-worn wood, alongside organic and mineral pigments gathered on her travels and natural materials such as sand, kohl and clay, giving her works an authentic three-dimensional presence.
Exhibited in Asia, Europe, the Americas and Africa, she has received a bronze medal from Dauphine Arts, Sciences et Lettres in Paris (2011) and two gold medals at the Fine Art Olympics in London (2012).
