Painter
Hassan Boukhari
The pattern of a rug, the embroidery of a garment, the ornament of an object seen from every angle: Hassan Boukhari practises a figuration of detail, so precise that visitors lean in to make sure it is not real.
The artist
A figuration of detail
Recognised as one of Morocco’s notable figurative painters, Hassan Boukhari has for years developed a personal approach in which the subject is always the detail. Rather than landscapes or fantasias, he chooses the motifs of craft, decorative objects and traditional dress, which he renders with a meticulousness bordering on obsession. Steeped in tradition, he paints like someone who has lived close to craftsmen and watched how they set designs and motifs on their work.
A rare presence
Begun cautiously more than a decade before his first notable exhibitions, his approach has reached maturity: the chosen themes, the materials and the very texture of the work set his figuration apart. He exhibits rarely, notably in group shows at the Ces Arts gallery, and his works remain much sought after.
