Painter
Hassan Souab
Hassan Souab was born in Oujda in 1954 and is often described as the Moroccan Van Gogh. He discovered drawing at the age of four through his sister's sketchbook, which he kept with him for fourteen years. His first work, painted in 1974, was a portrait of the singer Asmahan.
The artist
In 1978 he entered the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Tetouan, then studied at the art school in Brest, France, before returning to Morocco. Inspired by Van Gogh and Post-Impressionism, he paints in a poetic, expressionist style that records Moroccan daily life and culture: villages, nature, horses, fantasia and Gnaoua musicians, always in warm colours that play with time, movement, light and shadow. He often painted alongside his late companion Mohamed Douah.
Souab also works with natural materials such as wood, grass and spices, and is equally at home in zajal, poetry in Moroccan Arabic, and the halqa, the traditional storytelling circle.
