Painter
Jacques Azéma
Jacques Azéma (1910–1979) was a Parisian graduate of the École des Arts Décoratifs who discovered Morocco at twenty. He explored the Sahara by motorcycle, then settled in Marrakech in 1930, where he led a simple life, far from the glitter of some wealthy expatriates, and remained faithful to Morocco for nearly fifty years.
The artist
He ran painting workshops and taught drawing at the Lycée Mangin in Marrakech, then, from 1962, at the École des Beaux-Arts in Casablanca, where he played a part in shaping a Moroccan school of painting. A tireless inventor of images, he painted, drew and photographed, working in gouache and in egg tempera, an ancient technique he revived.
Long and unjustly forgotten, his work has recently been rediscovered for its singular palette, strong formal identity and mysterious atmosphere. His friend, the painter Mustapha Mekkaoui, summed it up: "Azéma is finesse and clarity, dream figures caught in a stillness that makes them eternal." His love of Morocco became his one and only subject.
