Painter

Jacques Majorelle

Jacques Majorelle was born in Nancy on 7 March 1886, the son of Louis Majorelle, the celebrated Art Nouveau cabinetmaker of the École de Nancy. He entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Nancy at fifteen to study architecture and decoration, then moved to Paris in 1903 to train as a painter. Travels in Spain and Italy, and then Egypt in 1910, where he sought a warm, dry climate for his fragile lungs, gradually turned his work towards Orientalism.

The works

The artist

In 1917 he settled in Morocco, which became the revelation of his life. Souks, kasbahs, the Atlas mountains and the edge of the Sahara fill his oils, watercolours and posters, from "Le Souk des tapis" (1924) to his album "Les Kasbahs de l'Atlas" (1930) and his travel journal through the Atlas and Anti-Atlas. He also painted the ceiling of La Mamounia in Marrakech, and in the 1930s experimented with gold and silver to heighten his colours.

In 1937 he painted his Marrakech villa and studio in an intense ultramarine tinged with violet: Majorelle blue was born, and in 1947 he opened his garden to the public. He died in Paris on 14 October 1962, aged 76, and is buried in Nancy beside his father. He remains one of the great names of 20th-century Orientalist painting.
