The works

The artist

"It is a permanent quest for the self, for that coveted silence we may never find again," she says of her work. Behind its apparent simplicity lies great complexity: monochrome has become her way of reaching silence. With almost no defined forms, a single colour and repeated, mute movements, her canvases are a struggle with herself. "Colour is not what matters in my work; it is the meaning of monochrome and the weight of silence it creates."

Working in red, blue and black, she builds layer upon layer towards a present, concrete material: "I am in the surface!" Small whirls scattered across the canvas bear witness to this inner confrontation. In 1995 she won second prize in Wafabank's Young Moroccan Painting competition.
