Painter
Khlafa El Badaoui
Khlafa El Badaoui (1934–2010) was born in Souk Larbaa El Gharb. Having lost his mother very young, he grew up as a shepherd, but his love of drawing kept growing. French painters living in Morocco noticed his talent, among them the Orientalist painter Paillard, who introduced him to the artistic circles of the time, and at twenty he held his first exhibition in Casablanca.
The artist
On the eve of Independence he painted "Le Maroc Nouveau", a large nationalist work offered to King Mohammed V on his return from exile, and was given a post at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, which he left eight years later to devote himself to painting. Recognised by UNESCO as one of the precursors of art in Morocco, he was close to Ben Ali R'bati, Jilali Gharbaoui and Gaston Mantel, and led workshops where young painters such as Bouchaib Falaki and Abdallah Fninou trained. He died in Meknes on 9 August 2010.
As the critic Abderrahman Benhamza wrote, Khlafa painted the Morocco that was entirely his own: its people, old medinas, the luminous south, markets, ports and festivals. Echoing Orientalism without exoticism, his work is today a precious document of Moroccan life.
