Painter
KIM Bennani
Born in Tetouan in 1972, Kim Bennani trained in the studio of his father, the painter Moa Bennani, whose influence he openly claims and whose work he still deeply respects. At just eleven he won first prize at Shankar's International Children's Competition in New Delhi, a sign of the career to come. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Tetouan, then at the School of Applied Arts in Malaga, Spain, and soon exhibited in France, Spain and Morocco, where he enjoys a fine reputation.
The artist
His early hyperrealist painting gave way after a three-month residency at the Claude Monet Foundation in Giverny in summer 2014, a turning point in his life and work. Through the study of landscape, his practice freed itself from academic constraints: his intimate world of fleeting dreams, poetry and immediate instinct now takes shape in material, pigment, line and light.
"Landscape only comes alive once it is joined to material," he says. "Its presence as tangible, fragile proof of existence is my sole concern, a necessary reconciliation between figuration and abstraction, between the said and the suggested."
