Loubna Alami
Born in Paris in 1977, Loubna Alami is a self-taught painter and visual artist. From beadwork to collage and relief canvases, her work traces the contours of her own experience and is dedicated to all women. Her first inspiration came from the "souvenir notebook", a Proustian madeleine for many schoolgirls now grown into women.
The artist
While studying finance and administration at Al Akhawayn University, she founded the "Graffiti" workshop, where she practised and taught introductory drawing. A visit to the Prado in Madrid in 2009 turned her firmly towards painting on canvas, and she taught herself oil painting before embracing mixed media from 2012.
Her pieces, assembled on canvas and inspired by body tattoos and henna ornament, form female figures full of meaning. Moving between abstraction and figuration, they tell real stories with women at their centre; her first exhibition boldly addressed infertility within couples, a long-taboo subject in Morocco. In 2020 she received a bronze medal from the Académie Arts-Sciences-Lettres.
