Painter
Maati Sabri
Maati Sabri lives and works in Had Soualem. Turning away from a world of anxiety and violence, his painting offers a soothing, peaceful vision, a Baudelairean invitation to travel where all is "order and beauty, luxury, calm and pleasure". His central concern is to safeguard Morocco's intangible heritage and, through art, to contribute to the cultural life and cohesion of the country.
The artist
His figuration is a reality transfigured by poetry: lively markets, whitewashed villages crowned with terraces, family scenes, but also interiors, still lifes, portraits and landscapes, built with solid construction and a harmonious balance of colour.
He begins by assembling a multitude of photographic elements into a finished composition, which he transfers to canvas before reworking the whole image in paint, balancing light, contrast and texture. Step back a few paces and the composition comes together and reveals its theme.
