Painter
Meryem El Alj
Meryem El Alj is a graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts in Tetouan and the École des Beaux-Arts in Nîmes, where she studied with artist-teachers such as Alain Clément and Claude Viallat. Her work is driven by a constant dynamic, returning again and again to a single form, the central subject of her practice, which offers endless pretexts for painting and a search she pursues with tenacity and sensitivity.
The artist
Painting is her starting point, an alphabet from which she composes. More recently she has begun cutting paper, wood, mirrors and plexiglass to play with materials, colours, transparency, reflection, light and shadow. Through superposition, the form occupies and inhabits space like choreography; in her painted woods, the frame defines the contour while freeing the painting's energy.
As the painter Fouad Bellamine observed, her canvases are organised in broad planes of colour, fragments of a universal space or of a barely recognisable silhouette, a palimpsest whose secret belongs to the artist alone.
