Career

Born in 1964, Mohamed Amzil was drawn to drawing and calligraphy from childhood. He entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Casablanca in 1982 and graduated in 1985; as the school then taught no calligraphy, he studied it on his own, from the works of the great masters, analysing the geometry and movement of the letters until he developed his own method.

In 1992, at the invitation of Ekmeleddin İhsanoğlu, Director General of IRCICA, the Research Centre for Islamic History, Art and Culture in Istanbul, he spent six weeks with the master calligrapher Hasan Çelebi, completing in that time the lessons of two particularly demanding scripts, naskh and thuluth. From 1993 he won prizes and gold medals in major competitions, including the international competition in Istanbul and the world calligraphy festival in Baghdad. In 1997 he received his ijaza, the master’s licence in calligraphy, from Hasan Çelebi in Istanbul.

From tradition to the modern letter

Grounded in the rules of the classical scripts, Amzil works to renew them: his canvases join calligraphy and painting, with colour handled in harmony with the movement of the letters. The Syrian critic and calligrapher Maasoum Mohamed Khalaf sees in his work a modern style born of perfect mastery of the classical canon, and an ornament of the letter inspired by the Saharan horizon.
