Painter
Mohamed Ben Allal
Souks, family rites, feasts, craftsmen and the crowds of Jemaa el-Fna: Mohammed Ben Allal told the daily life of Marrakech in frontal figures, flattened perspectives and radiant colour.
The artist
Career
Born in Marrakech in 1928, Mohammed Ben Allal began painting at sixteen, encouraged by the painter Jacques Azéma, who soon showed the young artist’s work alongside his own in a gallery on Jemaa el-Fna. During an exhibition at La Mamounia, an American collector acquired some thirty of his paintings and showed them successfully in Washington. Self-taught, he exhibited in Casablanca, Paris, Rome, Rabat and Tunisia. He died in 1995.
A chronicler of the medina
Ben Allal belongs to the first generation of Moroccan painters who, outside any academy, invented a pictorial language of their own. His compositions, dense and luminous, preserve a popular memory of Marrakech: gestures of craft, rituals, the theatre of the great square. In 2025-2026 the Fondation nationale des musées devoted the exhibition “Récits du quotidien” to him at the Museum of Intangible Heritage on Jemaa el-Fna.
