Painter
Mohamed Bennani (MOA)
Mohamed Bennani (Moa) was born in Tetouan in 1943 and died in 2023. His telluric, colourful works, meteoric and mysterious, are like small windows opening onto the immense cosmos, revelations through the perfection of their balance.
The artist
Like the desert, his images fascinate those who contemplate them: superimposed signs, fantastic skies, authentic lands and granite dreams merge and separate in a space made of night, fire and colour. His near-magical use of colour relies on the great secret of oil painting, transparency, which gives the painted surface its radiance and sense of expansion.
Over a long career he exhibited in Morocco, Europe, the Middle East and the United States, and his work is held in major public and private collections, including the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris and the personal collections of King Hassan II and King Mohammed VI.
