The artist

A child of Azemmour

He grew up in the old town of Azemmour, surrounded by local painters. The river that flows into the Atlantic and the town's mystical, Sufi-tinged atmosphere run through everything he paints. A stay in Essaouira later marked a turning point in his work.

Chasing the third dimension

For some forty years, El Hani first painted curved surfaces, decorating in three dimensions. That practice shaped his eye: on a flat canvas, he keeps chasing depth. The result is a fractal world where forms multiply endlessly, the infinite held within a frame, a kind of harmonious chaos.

Creatures, faces and streets

His kaleidoscopic compositions teem with strange creatures and parallel worlds, alongside the ancestral faces and alleys of Azemmour, the town he paints again and again. Up close, every centimetre hides a detail; from afar, the whole canvas vibrates.
