Painter
Mohamed Eskouni
Born in Sidi Slimane in 1972, Mohamed Eskouni is a largely self-taught painter. After a year of visual arts classes at the Lycée des Orangers in Rabat, he chose to devote his life to painting and learned through practice. In 1989, aged just seventeen and the youngest participant, he received a prize of honour at a group exhibition in Sidi Slimane.
The artist
He began with figurative painting, a demanding school for mastering line and colour, before turning to abstraction, which became his truest means of expression. He mixes paint in his hand to feel it better, and often paints to classical Arabic music or opera, which inspire the movement of his canvases. Returning to figuration from time to time, he also produces portraits and figures in Indian ink on canvas, with precise lines and exact expressions. For him, painting is freedom.
