Painter

Mohamed Rachidi

Drawing and painting side by side, matter shaped and reshaped: Mohamed Rachidi builds canvases that the critic Farid Zahi has called an almost bodily geography.

Career

Mohamed Rachidi’s career began in 1994, with a group exhibition at the Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences in Béni Mellal. Without passing through an art school, he took painting classes at the Alliance franco-marocaine in Rabat and learned through practice. In 1998 he took part in the second Biennale of Young Painting organised by the Wafabank Foundation in Casablanca.

In Rabat he held solo exhibitions at the Goethe-Institut’s Espace Weimar (2002, 2004), the Howard Samson Gallery (2003), the national gallery La Découverte (2006) and Espace Expressions CDG (2008). In 2008 he joined the artists’ residency of PAX, Planet Art Exchange, in Liverpool, then European Capital of Culture, and exhibited at International Gallery; in 2009 he took part in the DIDOME residency in Toulouse.

A gestural, coloured matter

Refusing to copy others or to belong to any school, Rachidi paints his inner emotion, giving the sketch a large place and keeping drawing and painting in dialogue. For Farid Zahi, his chromatic sensitivity is highly elaborate: a controlled gesture that seeks to capture sensation, a matter he models and remodels, an inner world reinvented through a coloured, material gesture. His works, non-figurative, leave each viewer free to read them in his own way.
