Painter

Mohamed Sarghini

The blue houses of Larache, its violet and crimson flowers, the modesty of northern women in djellaba and haik: Mohamed Sarghini, “master of colour”, trained two generations of Moroccan painters and sculptors.

Career

Born in Larache in 1923, Mohamed Sarghini drew, painted and sculpted from childhood, taking the lanes of his home town as his first subject. After his baccalaureate he enrolled at the San Fernando school in Madrid; fluent in Spanish, he also loved the Andalusia of his ancestors, which runs through many of his paintings. He first exhibited in Larache in 1941 and graduated in drawing and sculpture in 1950. In 1956 he was appointed director of the National School of Artistic Crafts in Tetouan, and the following year of the city’s National School of Fine Arts, which he led until 1987. He died in 1991.

A founding teacher

Painter and sculptor, Sarghini belongs to the founding generation of the Tetouan school. His work, rooted in the light and colours of the north, joins Spanish academic training to a deep attachment to Moroccan life; through his teaching, his influence reaches far beyond his own work.
