About Mohammed Issami

Born in 1980 in Casablanca, Mohammed Mouden Issami is a self-taught Moroccan painter who began painting at the age of 13. Over the years he has developed a recognisable naive style, built on bright colours, curved lines and bold outlines.

Issami favours large formats, which give him room to depict scenes of traditional Moroccan life with a modern eye. He combines oil paint with silk-paper collage and sand, and his work returns again and again to the female figure, which he treats as a symbol rather than a simple portrait.
