Mokhtar Ghailan
Born in the Tangier region of northern Morocco, Mokhtar Ghailan began his artistic career in the late 1960s and has lived from his art since 1970. His travels through Algeria, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Italy, Spain, France, Belgium and England, where he lived for ten years, nourished both his inspiration and his technique, from figuration and Impressionism to Surrealism and abstraction, and later sculpture.
The artist
A specialist in large-scale works, he has created frescoes and sculptures for public and private buildings, including a 114-metre sculpted wall at the entrance to Agadir in 1994 and a miniature kasbah for the city of Taroudant in 1997. In 1999 he was the first artist to paint the portrait of King Mohammed VI after his accession, and Moroccan television entrusted him with an art programme for children.
His signature motif is the dome: a universal form, marabout for some, cupola for others, a symbol of spirituality that appears in his canvases as an instrument of peace.
