Painter
Mostafa Aloumari (Al Majdoub)
Born in Casablanca in 1968, Mostafa Aloumari, known as Al Majdoub, is a self-taught painter. His fresh, figurative palette recalls the imaginary world of Chaïbia Talal: spontaneous gesture, mostly female figures rendered in an illustrative yet allegorical manner, and an intuitive use of colour arranged without artifice.
The artist
While acknowledging his debt to Chaïbia, Aloumari brings something of his own in his motifs, his range of colour and his light. He introduces a phosphorescent technique that shifts effects and nuances across the canvas, so that, depending on the angle, the viewer always seems to see something new.
A playful painter with a fantastical sense of form, he scatters his canvases with symbols, "graphic words" that quietly refuse the constraints of daily life. Drawing on Moroccan tradition while resisting all conformity, his work is immediately accessible and deeply personal. His very first public exhibition was a success, with works quickly finding collectors.
