Painter
Mostafa Warrak
A graduate of the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Casablanca, Mostafa Warrak (born in Casablanca in 1965) is a wanderer in the world of painting. His visual language is charged with stories and emotion, driven by the wish to open up an inner space through quiet, silent painting.
The artist
Attentive to the relationship between form and colour, he treats the canvas as subjective memory and secret alchemy, guided by his states of mind. Spontaneous strokes and lyrical touches set up dialogues between high and low, sky and earth, horizontal and vertical, while blue, the spiritual colour par excellence, brings serenity, silence and contemplation. A painter of the "new figuration", he works in the register of lyrical abstraction, breaking the boundary between abstraction and representation through traces of colour and fragments of forms and figures.
"I no longer work with colour, but with the light reflected by colour," he explains. "What matters is the trace left by the gesture, and the dialogue I build with what happens on the surface of the canvas." For this gestural painter, the adventure of painting counts far more than the result.
