Painter
Mostapha Ben Malek
Nature, figures and animals caught in a delirious movement, colour bursting with joy: Mostapha Ben Malek paints a hallucinated reality, at the crossroads of art brut and popular art.
The artist
Career
Born in 1977 in the Essaouira region, Mostapha Ben Malek began painting at the age of twelve. Self-taught, he is regarded as one of the most prominent artists of the city of the trade winds, and belongs to the family of Essaouira’s singular painters.
A singular art
At the meeting point of Arab, Amazigh and African cultures, his creations are spontaneous and immediate, with the freshness of life and music. Ethnic, tribal or naive, as one prefers to call it, his painting relies on the creative power of the gesture and an unbridled imagination. As Yann Tribes and Bernard Liagre have noted, this singular art, whose spontaneity knows no borders, establishes an immediate communication between the work and the sensibility of each viewer.
