Painter
Rachid Sebti
Caftans, white sheets drying on the terraces, the steam of the hammam: Rachid Sebti paints women with a tenderness and a restraint that owe nothing to Orientalist display.
The artist
Career
Born in Larache, Rachid Sebti studied at the École nationale des Beaux-Arts in Tetouan, then perfected his craft at the Académie royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. A Moroccan-Belgian artist, he settled in Belgium, where he received the medal of the Belgian government and the Prize of the City of Brussels. He also designed a postage stamp printed in more than six million copies, and a series of five stamps on the theme of “idyllic Wallonia”.
He has never really left his native north: he returns often, and its light, colours and memories of childhood run through his painting. In 2016, his exhibition “Ode à la femme”, some thirty canvases, inaugurated the Espace Rivages of the Hassan II Foundation for Moroccans Living Abroad in Rabat, the first exhibition by a Moroccan artist of the diaspora in that space.
An ode to women
A figurative painter who belongs to no school, Sebti works from life, in vivid colour and light. His scenes are those of women’s worlds: the hammam, caftans, wedding nights, laundry on the rooftops, reverie and sleep. Behind the intimacy, his painting also speaks of confinement and of the limits placed on women’s freedom. He treats the nude with transparency and modesty, far from both Orientalist splendour and purely decorative beauty, as in his canvas La Honte.
