Painter
Roman Lazarev
Morocco’s splendours and its light, approached with tenderness and finesse rather than exoticism: Roman Lazarev painted a country he had interiorised from birth.
The artist
Career
Born in Morocco, Roman Lazarev studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Rabat, then visual arts in Casablanca. A stay in Paris, where he met Bobot, a passionate admirer of orientalism, also shaped his path. From his roots, encounters and experiences he forged a style of his own, which set him apart from many painters with similar lives.
The East without orientalism
Lazarev loved the East without claiming to be an orientalist, aware of how easily such labels mislead. He first renders the setting and the atmosphere before tackling his subject, placing things in their context; each work is built by the patient assembly of small pieces until the image appears. This method earned him consideration and respect.
