Ryad Mouline

Small men in jellabas and red tarbouches, painted with humour and tenderness: self-taught, Ryad Mouline has made the traditional Moroccan figure the hero of a naive, joyful painting.

Career

A native of Rabat, Ryad Mouline studied at the Collège Talha, then at the American school, a double education that shaped his two cultures. He continued at a university in Boston, earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration, an MBA and a master’s in information technology, and lived and worked in Boston for twelve years before returning to Rabat to specialise in business consulting and development.

Art has drawn him since childhood: as a boy he made sculptures from pen caps and soda cans, painted, sang in his school choir and practised theatre and photography. He learned painting by doing, without formal training, and never set it aside during his professional career. In 2017 the Villa des Arts in Casablanca presented his recent work.

The little men

Mouline describes himself as a naive artist. His paintings tell stories drawn from his life, his childhood memories and the people around him, leaving each viewer free to make the story his own. His signature figures, little men in jellabas and red tarbouches, appear in every shape, size and material, painted with a fresh, uninhibited touch, and even reappear as soft “sculptures” that extend the canvas with a smile.
