Painter
Said Housbane
Born in Casablanca in 1957, Saïd Housbane worked in comics and illustration in the 1980s, and that influence still shapes his painting. He often divides his canvases into grids that recall the panels of a comic strip, and fragments a single character to give each face a different state of mind.
The artist
One of his most striking ideas was to give form to the canons of female beauty in Moroccan popular culture, where the mouth is a ring and the eyes are crystal glasses. Following these criteria to the letter, he arrived at a figure reminiscent of manga, though he says his references are French and Belgian comics. His recurring character appears happy, melancholy, serious or angry, painted with a sure line and a theatrical atmosphere.
