Painter
Slimane Drissi
Human bodies and Arabic letters merge under a light that comes from the moon, a star or the sun: Slimane Drissi paints human relationships and the spirit’s bond with a higher source.
The artist
Career
Born in Essaouira in 1976, where he lives and works, Slimane Drissi played with colours and forms from childhood. He earned a double baccalaureate in experimental sciences and visual arts. He has exhibited in Spain, Belgium, Marrakech, Rabat and regularly in his home town, and won the first prize of the Andalusian Music Festival in Essaouira.
Body, letter and light
His paintings fuse symbols of the human body and Arabic calligraphy to express the dynamism of relationships within society. For the writer Anis Arrafai, Drissi appears at once classical and neo-modernist, simple and complex in the same canvas, his concern going beyond any school: a rich visual vocabulary of fragmentation, movement, continuity and unity.
