Painter
Smail Tirsi
A graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts in Casablanca, Smaïl Tirsi lives and works in Casablanca, in the working-class Ifriquia district. His canvases are peopled with mysterious figures: oval heads, long slender necks, slight female silhouettes, surrounded by a halo of hatching that seems to express an urge to break free. His quick, incisive lines recall the freshness of graffiti, repeated until they become a hieroglyphic language of their own.
The artist
Objects appear here and there, especially tea glasses, for a play of transparency, fullness and emptiness, and a crimson apple, heavy with symbolism. Greys of every shade, like ash, intensify light and shadow, softened by touches of ochre from his native region south of Taroudant.
For Tirsi, art carries an ethical impulse, a search for meaning in the face of chaos. "Painting," he says, "is a personal inner meditation on life with all its contradictions. Something wants to express itself, and it comes out as faces and bodies."
