The artist
Abbès Benchekroun: painting everyday life
Originally from Fez, Abbès Benchekroun attended fine arts classes in Casablanca before working in advertising. He devoted himself to painting from 1984. His practice developed from gouache on paper to work on canvas, particularly in acrylic.
His figurative compositions centre on Moroccan life: streets, markets, meals, dances and everyday occupations. People and their gestures shape these scenes, while colour and movement give familiar activities a distinctive presence.
