Painter

Abdelali Sahtoute

Busts and hands rendered with anatomical precision, faces with closed eyes or hidden under hair and veils: Abdelali Sahtoute paints the body as a carrier of thought, torn between two cultures.

Career

Born in Salé in 1956, Abdelali Sahtoute held his first exhibition at sixteen, in 1972, then studied painting at the National School of Fine Arts in Tetouan under Mekki Megara, who taught him to look differently at form and colour. With a grant from the Ministry of Culture he spent four years at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, where Francis Brichet introduced him to printmaking, then two years at the École supérieure des arts visuels in Mons, marked by Gabriel Belgeonne. He settled near Ghent as a painter and screen printer, and is better known in Belgium than in France or Morocco.

The flesh of the world

Rarely drawn to landscape, Sahtoute uses his draughtsmanship to stage the human body in series. In “Switching”, a head shown three times sways between identities; in “Message”, a pseudo-Arabic script, purely graphic, dissolves meaning. His palette is restrained, greyish white and bistre, flesh tones lifted by touches of green, sky blue or red. Emotion and the energy of the body remain, he says, an inexhaustible source, translated from the most refined technique to the rawest touch.
