Painter
Said Lahssini
Saïd Lahssini’s figures, distorted, resigned or burlesque, disconcert before they move us: behind their strangeness lies a humanity without disguise.
The artist
Career
Born in 1959, Saïd Lahssini is a Moroccan painter whose figuration was singled out early by the Moroccan press for the way it steps off the beaten track.
Between dream and reality
His painting sits where dream, the unconscious and memory meet. Often built like a stage set, his compositions bring forth figures with a fantastical air who speak of marginality, taboo and human distress without ever giving up a certain tenderness.
A meticulous hand
Behind this raw vision the craft is precise: careful drawing, measured colour, deliberately muted pigments that carry a sensibility of disenchantment and restrained revolt. In Lahssini’s hands, expressionism is a discipline.
