Painter
Abdelaziz Cherkaoui
Pensive, solemn women of the north in traditional dress, children, a few men, a rocky landscape: Abdelaziz Cherkaoui paints with classical rigour what he calls a “psychic realism”.
The artist
Career
Born in Larache in 1963, Abdelaziz Cherkaoui spent his childhood in the douar of Dar Chaoui, between Tetouan and Larache, the world that still feeds his painting. Self-taught, he set out to master the craft of the great classical painters, his masters. He has exhibited since 1986 in Morocco and Europe, notably at the Venise Cadre gallery in Casablanca, and lives between Paris, Rabat and Tetouan.
The light of truth
Drawing, contrast and detail serve paintings whose titles alone tell stories: “La discrète”, “L’intrigante”, “Tu pars déjà”, “Petites rumeurs”. In the background of each canvas one reads the inner life of the figures in the foreground; he seeks, he says, the truth of these people, light being a truth. For the critic Azzouz Tnifass, Cherkaoui is no belated orientalist: he is intimately part of what he paints, capturing the north as a space and a time both real and mythological.
