Painter
Abdellah El Haitout
Warm and cold tones in bold mixtures, semi-figurative motifs caught in deliberate abstraction: Abdellah El Haitout paints the way one cooks, always in search of new flavours.
The artist
A painting of mixtures
Moroccan painter Abdellah El Haitout claims an expressive abstraction in which semi-figurative motifs and deliberate abstraction share the surface. He likes to compare his practice to Moroccan cooking, a preparation always on the lookout for daring combinations, and, like Picasso, says he does not search but finds: art hides in the dusty corners of everyday life, waiting for a sensitive eye to recognise it.
Diptychs and dualities
The diptych is central to his work, a choice he links to Islamic iconography and its staging of dualities. On these paired panels he superimposes forms and colours that answer each other freely. For El Haitout, painting should reconcile technique, theory and emotion, and open itself to society: drawing on the thought of Abdelfattah Kilito, he sees abstraction as a language capable of reaching a wide public and of nourishing a visual culture that Moroccan cities still lack.
