Abdellah Fakhar
Faces painted with the brush and then reworked with the knife, everyday scenes captured with their full flavour: Abdellah Fakhar, painter, sculptor and teacher, was one of the pioneers of Moroccan painting, long under-recognised.
The artist
Career
A native of Tetouan, Abdellah Fakhar studied at the city’s School of Fine Arts, then at the Santa Isabel de Hungría school in Seville and the School of Fine Arts in Madrid. In 1959 he won the Landscape Prize, and from 1960 taught drawing and art history at the Tetouan School of Fine Arts, which he went on to direct. Generations of students learned drawing from him. He died in Tetouan in 1990, leaving a substantial body of work, later honoured with a tribute exhibition at the Villa des Arts in Rabat.
Between anguish and jubilation
A faithful disciple of Mariano Bertuchi, Fakhar remained all his life the artist most attached to the Andalusian Spanish school. An outstanding draughtsman, he prepared his own pigments and gave each portrait the weight of his own life and pain; his last canvases bear the mark of a struggle against anxiety. His painting swings from melancholy to euphoria, with figures that seem to rise from the earth or to dissolve back into clay. He also excelled in sculpture and in everything touching architecture.
