Painter
Abdellatif Ben Najem
Water carriers, imams, Rif soldiers, horsemen and veiled women with burning eyes: in his paintings on glass, Abdellatif Ben Najem told a whole Morocco, from the depths of his bazaar.
The artist
The bazaar keeper turned storyteller
In Tangier, Abdellatif Najem kept a bazaar of plates, pottery and inlaid boxes. As soon as a visitor asked about his latest painted glasses, the merchant became an artist and an orator, unpacking, explaining and showing his works with obvious pride, as the writer Philippe Guiguet-Bologne recalled in his tribute. His shop and his art of living were a window onto the Morocco he painted: squares with noisy fountains, timeless figures, children dressed for a feast.
A naive cosmogony
The naive stillness of his early paintings on glass gradually gave way to movement, a sign of maturity and of a modernity he sensed. Behind their craft appearance, these reverse-glass paintings were works in which form was thought through and questioned. Gentle in tone yet sharp in contrast, they told his world, entirely his own, in its simplicity and its complexity.
