The artist
Career
A Moroccan-Canadian artist born in Meknes into a family of Andalusian origin, Abderrahim Benhalima trained as a graphic designer at the school of applied arts in Lausanne, then in visual communication in Orléans and at the École des Beaux-Arts in Épinal, with internships at Nestlé in Vevey and RTL in Luxembourg. In 1983 he obtained the DNSEP, the French higher national diploma in fine art, at Cergy-Pontoise. His career has taken him between Morocco, Switzerland, France and Canada; he ran the communication agency Inter Design in Casablanca and taught graphic communication and visual arts.
Two major projects
“Visions pacifiques” belongs to expressionist painting and to the values of peace; “Révélation” extends the research of minimalist geometric abstraction. Across both, his painting is marked by sober colours, rich matter, a strong sensitivity to light and shadow, and a gesture and rhythm that constantly renew themselves.
