Painter
Abderrahmane Rahoule
Cubism, geometry, abstraction, then terracotta and bronze polished until light slides across them: Abderrahmane Rahoule is a polyglot creator, painter, ceramist and sculptor, whose discretion matches the generosity of his work.
The artist
Career
Born in Casablanca in 1944 and raised in Derb Sultan, Abderrahmane Rahoule began his training at the city’s École des Beaux-Arts in 1962, then went to Paris, where he studied at a national school of industrial arts and crafts and at the Académie populaire des arts plastiques. A ceramics placement in the Netherlands led to his first exhibition; he then worked with faience in Czechoslovakia. Back in Casablanca, he was invited by Farid Belkahia, with Mohamed Chabâa and Mohamed Melehi, to teach at the École des Beaux-Arts, which he went on to direct from 2003-2004 until 2017.
Walls, domes and curves
As the historian Mohamed Sijilmassi observed, Rahoule pursues painting and ceramics side by side, carrying the same harmonious forms from one material to the other. The intertwined, rounded figures of his early exhibitions gave way to architectural constructions where walls and domes evoke the calm and intimacy of Moroccan, and especially Casablanca, houses. His sculptures, smooth and tender, celebrate the couple and desire through a play of void and solid, close in spirit to his friend Mohamed Hamidi.
